In 1969, George began his esteemed career with the Michigan State Police as a State Trooper. During a significant assignment in Lansing, meant to last three months but extending nearly two years, George played a crucial role in redefining investigative approaches—contributions that continue to influence the department today. Working alongside students from Michigan State University, he helped develop the first program capable of searching fingerprints across an entire database, a groundbreaking advancement in law enforcement technology. His expertise was sought in notable cases such as the Oakland Child Killings, the Hilltop Strangler, and the Son of Sam, underscoring his dedication to protecting the community. George’s leadership was recognized with rapid promotions, culminating in his role as Post Commander in Tawas. Despite opportunities for further advancement, his unwavering principles guided his decision to retire after 25 years of service, remaining true to the values that had defined his career. He is survived by his children, Skip Willoughby and Brandi Johnston; his sibling, Cal Lane; and the cherished memories shared with his late mother, Delores Willoughby, and his pet, Waldo.
